MultiSearch 2 and 3 released

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

I use Firefox and Google to do most of my research, and while tabbed browsing is a very useful feature, it still requires that extra bit of work to make searches flow efficiently - especially when I’m searching for different search phrases at the same time. The normal procedure is: [CTRL-TAB],[TAB (to get to firefox's Google search box)][type phrase][enter], and then repeat procedure for each new search tab you want to open. This procedure is clumsy and slow, and keeping track of which tab is for which search is a time consuming, memory wasting, process that no one _needs_ to endure.

To solve this problem, I created one single page that loads up to 3 Google pages at the same time, each with their own search box. This way, I can load up the main page, enter the search phrases I want in each frame, and have all three search frames display results simultaneously. I like that! For lazy people like me, that saves me lots of [ALT-TAB]‘ing and [CTRL-TAB]‘ing.

What’s even nicer is, depending on how your Firefox is customized, I can click a search result and have it open in the frame in which it was found, or simply [left-click] on the result to have it open as a new tab. No more [ALT-TAB]‘ing, [RIGHT-CLICK]‘ing, [MIDDLE-CLICKING]‘ing.

For convenience I’ve created two MultiSearch pages:

MultiSearch 2 - splits a page into two Google search frames, and,

MultiSearch 3 - splits a page into three Google search frames.

Now how cool is that?!

Questions I have are: how well does it work in other browsers, and how does it work on mobile phones.

I’d love some feedback!

Born is a page listing more honours mini-theses. As pointed out before, I will be happy to supervise/co-supervise these projects. And the projects on this page will be presented to the 2009 Computer Science students at the University of the Western Cape.

The page is here ( http://www.idigitall.com/honours-mini-theses/ ).

Tech Tools - Top 10 tech tools

Monday, October 6th, 2008

The page Techtools has been born. It contains my compilation of Top-10 Must-have windows techtools. These tools have saved my life on a number of occasions, and while may not be a complete solution, they serve to debug your problem and shed light on it. Some of them can be used in ways that don’t comply with security/usage policies of organizations. And having been a sys admin myself I don’t condone it.
